On a warm Sunday evening Gal, Sendrill, and I were roaming the Borderlands hunting for bags. During our run Sendrill and I came across two dueling players. We watched the duel at south camp while Gal was AFK. It was between two Willbenders and it was going well until a random Ranger showed up and interrupted the duel. The Ranger, who was on our server, was quickly dispatched by the enemy Willbender while the three of us looked on. The Ranger complained that the location was not for dueling. We all disagreed and stated that location had been the de facto dueling location for most of the game’s life. The Ranger promptly left and returned to spawn.
The Willbenders both healed up and restarted their duel. As the enemy Willbender was starting to lose, the Ranger once again returned and sniped the kill from our friendly Willbender. He proceeded to dance over his body then waypointed away, avoiding any confrontation. He clearly knew what he did and didn’t want to be reprimanded for his actions.
When Gal returned we told him the story of the two Willbenders, the duel, and the nuisance Ranger. We made sure to flourish the details to drive home the point of the filthy Ranger and his weak skills. We highlighted that he was clearly new to the game as his armor and skills were not of a seasoned player.
After a short roam around the map we again returned to the dueling location. We saw the Willbender standing in the dueling location while the pathetic Ranger and his friend road past him on their mounts. Sendrill and I cheered as the Willbender mounted up and threw his spear, dismounting the Ranger. The fight was on! Two vs one. The Willbender was winning. Gal looked on and saw the young, poorly geared, poorly skilled Ranger and his friend being pummeled into the ground. He ran past both Sendrill and I to engage the Willbender. We pleaded with Gal, “Stop Gal! He’s the Ranger that interrupted the duel! He’s the Ranger that was a complete jerk and has bad manners!” The Ranger had done this to himself, that his current misfortune was of his own doing. But Gal, in his blood lust, ignored our pleas and kept chasing the Willbender. The Willbender was able to escape Gal’s initial barrage and we continued to plea to Gal, “Gal, stop killing him! He’s two vs one against the Ranger and winning. Stop!” But Gal couldn’t see reason, he ignored the cries of his fellow guildmates, he only saw blood. In the end, Gal killed the Willbender.
Instead of the expected praise of his guildmates, Gal was met with harsh criticism and scolding tones. Gal was confused, unable to comprehend what he had done. Sendrill and I questioned him, asking if he had ignored our story? Why he ignored our pleas to stop? But Gal said he didn’t hear us. He said we didn’t tell him the story. Sendrill and I were shocked by the allegations. In our confusion we repeated the story to him, explaining the fine details, this time with no embellishments. Gal then said that he thought the Willbender was the bad-mannered player and that’s why he attacked him. We confronted him, “You said you didn’t hear our story! So which is it, Gal? Did you hear our story and misunderstand what we said, or did you not hear the story at all?!” Gal didn’t answer the question, instead opting to cry out that we were gaslighting him.
As the night carried on, we continued to discuss the details of the whole event. But Gal was now entrenched in the delusion that we were gaslighting him. Gal never did answer the question, whether he misinterpreted the story or flat out didn’t hear it at all. Instead, he insists that the events never happened.
To this day Gal will scream at the top of his lungs “GASLIGHTING!”
